Antwerp (Antwerpen in Dutch–one of the official languages of Belgium) is one of the largest cities in Belgium with a population over 480,000 inhabitants, which is even larger than Melissa’s hometown of Pittsburgh, PA (population: about 300,000) and dwarfs Jason’s hometown of Wheeling, WV (population: about 28,000).
While these facts are entertaining, this information can be easily found on Wikipedia. Instead, the purpose of this site is to provide information about what it’s really like to live in Antwerp from an outsider’s point-of-view. In their short time living in Antwerp, many interesting cultural differences had been observed. They not only would like to share their experiences with family and friends, but they also hope that this information helps other foreigners who are currently living or considering living in Antwerp.
Jason and Melissa met on Match.com in January 2011 after she already accepted a post-doctoral researcher position at the University of Antwerp. Only a short time passed before they fell in love. After finding out that they were expecting a baby in November, Jason decided to also move to Antwerp with Melissa.
